Foot Bath Precautions

1. The duration of foot soaking should not be too long—ideally between 15 and 30 minutes. Once your feet become wet, blood will flow to the lower limbs, potentially reducing blood supply to the brain. Patients with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases, as well as elderly individuals, should stop soaking their feet if they experience symptoms such as chest tightness or dizziness. Diabetic patients have reduced peripheral sensory function; therefore, family members should first test the water temperature in the foot-soaking basin to prevent burns.

2. The water temperature for foot baths should not be too high. Many people believe that as long as the water temperature is within their comfortable range, the higher the temperature, the better—but this isn't actually the case. The optimal water temperature for foot baths is below 50℃. The water must feel warm, but not scalding. Don’t use your hand to measure the water temperature; instead, use your feet to gauge it. If the water is too hot, the blood vessels in your feet are likely to overexpand, causing more blood to flow into your lower limbs. On the contrary, this can easily lead to insufficient blood supply to the heart, brain, kidneys, and other vital organs, which can be harmful to your body.

3. It is not recommended to soak your feet within half an hour after a meal. In the long run, this could impair blood supply to the stomach and lead to malnutrition. Additionally, you won't be able to fall asleep immediately after soaking your feet. After soaking your feet, gently rub the soles of your feet to warm them up, put on socks to keep them warm, and go to bed only when your body temperature has gradually started to cool down.

Don't soak your feet for special people.

Children should not soak their feet in hot water for extended periods. Since the arch of the foot develops during childhood, it’s crucial to protect it from damage caused by young children. If children’s feet are frequently washed with hot water, the ligaments on the soles of their feet will become loose, which can hinder the proper formation and maintenance of the foot arch and increase the likelihood of developing flat feet.

Do not soak your feet in traditional Chinese medicine during your menstrual period. Consult your doctor and take medications appropriate for your specific condition.
